The number of the world's commercial Time-Division Long-Term Evolution 4G networks is very likely to catch up with those of commercial Frequency-Division Duplex Long-Term Evolution networks in three to five years, according to the president of Nokia Siemens Networks China.

Building a converged LTE 4G network, which supports both TD-LTE and FDD LTE telecommunication standards, has won a greater popularity among global telecom operators, said Markus Borchert.

Profit falls from rising costs despite jump in number of subscribers.

China Telecom Corp Ltd said it has set a target of recruiting 30 million new 3G subscribers to its mobile service this year.

The telecom services provider, the third-largest in China, released its annual results on Wednesday. Its net profit fell 9.5 percent to 14.9 billion yuan ($4.6 billion) in 2012, compared with 16.5 billion in the previous year, while operating revenue grew 15.5 percent from 245 billion yuan in 2011 to 283 billion yuan last year.

China Mobile set to deploy new system covering 500m people across country.

China Mobile Communications Corp, the parent company of the world's largest telecom carrier by subscriber, announced on Tuesday that it plans to deploy the world's biggest 4G LTE network in China this year, covering more than half a billion people, according to the company's chairman.

In a keynote speech at the Global TD-LTE Initiative summit in Barcelona, Xi Guohua said the homegrown TD-LTE technology is gaining in popularity across the globe as the industry matures.

She made the remarks while attending a 4G forum held in Taipei yesterday. The event was held from July 11 to 12. LTE is a 4G technology, a step up from the currently adopted 3G.

During the forum, participants discussed various overarching issues facing operators.
