Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay typhoon shelter once was a thriving nighttime entertainment district, where people escaped from the summer’s blistering heat. Some former residents of the shelter hope to bring back that culture, Doug Meigs reports.

It’s around sunset. An old woman on Nam Kee Wharf shouts to a water taxi festooned with pink neon lights. The boat putters over. The evening’s first dinner guests have arrived. They climb aboard the water taxi and are ferried the short distance to a cluster of small wooden “dinner” boats, loosely distributed around a large floating kitchen.

Ever wish you could check your food for health hazards before you cook it, or even leave the supermarket?

Well, scientists at Tianjin University of Science and Technology say they have developed a handheld tester that can detect pathogenic bacteria and excessive drug or pesticide residue.

The kit, which contains more than 60 strips of indicator paper - one for almost every contaminant listed by the State - works in a matter of minutes, said Wang Shuo, director of the college's biotech laboratory.

For example, users simply dip the right strip into milk, and if two bars on the paper turn purple, it contains melamine.

Algae choking freshwater supply triggers campaign against pollution, report Xu Taotao, Wang Zhenghua in Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

When Zhang Yan spoke of a "happy transformation", the native of Huzhou in Zhejiang province was referring to recent changes in his life and the environment of his hometown.

Six years ago, Zhang worked as a chef at a restaurant on one of the 24 private vessels floating in a harbor on the southern shore of Taihu Lake, one of China's largest freshwater bodies.

These vessels, along with hundreds of families living on the water, discharged untreated sewage directly into the lake every day.

They’re out there -- the music police – but they don’t play music – they don’t even sing – they’re on the trial of the music pirates and they could be headed for your favorite pub or restaurant, Ming Yeung reports.

It wasn’t until they started targeting old folks’ homes that anybody began taking notice of them – the music police, that is – the people who put their ears to keyholes and cracks underneath doors, ever alert for strains of contraband music. They are agents of PPSEAL, Phonographic Performance (South East Asia) Limited, and wherever they go, a cone of silence spreads out behind them like the wake of a ship.

Pakistani President finishes five years in power but fails to provide promised economic progress.

If electoral democracy were a cake, Pakistanis would be coming off a five-year binge. Instead, the nation is poorer, hungrier, and more deprived today than it was in March 2008.

For the first time since independence in 1947, democratically elected legislatures completed their constitutionally mandated tenures in Pakistan without being summarily uprooted by a military regime or its civilian proxy. This is indeed a significant landmark in Pakistan’s democratic journey.

The discovery of a huge number of dead pigs floating in rivers, lakes and streams in the area around Shanghai has once again put China's livestock and food industries in the spotlight. Report by Wang Hongyi in Jiaxing and He Na and Xu Wei in Beijing.

Zhulin village in Jiaxing city, Zhejiang province, is one of China's largest pig-breeding centers. As you drive along the road towards the village, the air reeks of pig feed and the smell of manure becomes overwhelming. The residents joke that if they close their eyes while traveling by train, they never miss their station simply because the smell tells them exactly where they are.

The ochre-colored, two-story houses are scattered across the village, and compared with the noise on the road, the place is quiet, except for the squeals of the pigs.

Quantitative easing has failed so there is no reason to pump more cash into the developed world.

Since 2008 and the great financial crash in the West, China, a fast-growing emerging country with the world’s largest pool of savings, has been pushed into a central place as a result of the economic weakness of most of the developed or G7 countries.

The fact that in 2012 China overtook the US to become the world’s largest trader of goods underlines that, no matter how much China’s domestic demand expands, China’s economic fortunes remain closely linked to the other major global economies.

Two years after triple disaster devastated Japan, two valiant towns struggle to make a new start.

When Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended a memorial ceremony in Tokyo on March 11 with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for the thousands of people who died in the triple disaster in Japan in 2011, the commemoration was only one part of the story.

The other part is the steady work by people and places away from the limelight to rebuild the towns hit by the killer earthquake, the ensuing tsunami and the nuclear meltdown at the Daiichi nuclear plant in Fukushima.

Tuesday will mark the 10th anniversary of the start of the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Tuesday will mark the 10th anniversary of the start of the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. A decade ago, along with many other people, I was against this. However, the strong worldwide opposition did not prevent a US-led war being waged in Iraq on the pretext of stopping Saddam Hussein from gaining weapons of mass destruction.

The war in Iraq from 2003 to 2011 was a tragedy, not just for Iraqis but also for Americans; and indeed for the rest of the world as well.

Pyongyang says Seoul's military drills with US are a rehearsal for an invasion.

Seoul's defense ministry on Tuesday dismissed Pyongyang's repeated warnings of military action as "psychological tactics", as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea warned its southern neighbor and Washington of the "catastrophic consequences" of their ongoing joint military drills.

Kim Min-seok, the Republic of Korea's defense ministry spokesman, said the DPRK "has been consistently issuing rhetorical threats warning of provocations". He called the threats "an attempt to put psychological pressure" on the ROK.

Even in Hong Kong, amid all its opulence and wealth, people still go hungry. And in the city that boasts the world’s tenth largest trading economy, a non-government organization, Feeding Hong Kong, says 300,000 children do not get three meals a day, and one in three seniors have to struggle to meet their basic nutritional needs, Timothy Chui reports.

Just past one in the afternoon, Hong Kong’s legendary skyline emerges from behind the cloak of morning cloud, dazzling well-heeled white-collar types crossing the Statue Square tramline and betraying no sign she’s the arthritic old dowager, slowed by a population rapidly aging.

In late January, To's wife shipped their three cats from Beijing to Zhuhai, Guangdong province, for 1,100 yuan ($177).

Like many other Chinese pet owners, they contacted an agent on e-commerce site Taobao.com to take care of the arrangements.

Firsthand experience of life among the people is an invaluable asset for the country's new top leaders, reports Peng Yining in Beijing.

When Xi Jinping, China's top political leader, worked as a village head in the northwestern province of Shaanxi in the 1970s, his unstuffy attitude boosted his popularity. Xi was happy to stand in icy water to help farmers reinforce river banks; he organized a small cooperative for blacksmiths and helped build the first methane tank in the province, according to reports from Xinhua News Agency.
