Making an old dress new again has become an art for independent designers, but the trend doesn't stop at the small shops, as Gan Tian finds out.

Old is in, new is out.

Fashionistas are always seeking the "new" garment, accessories of "this season", or "the latest collection" from the designers. However, style-conscious shoppers have recently been embracing fashion that has been recreated from discarded clothes.

Thermal underwear is a fashion don't in China - or, at least it has been.

Fashionistas' frosty feelings toward the winter wear are thawing. And this shift has heated up as the country is frozen by the coldest winter in nearly three decades.

The hippest used to regard people who wear thermals, called qiuku in Chinese, as lame and corny. That's partly because the styles and colors are, well, boring.

Vintage clothing is becoming fashionable and stores are sprouting like mushrooms.

With its exaggerated cutting, ornate colors and classic designs, vintage clothing has at long last become fashionable in China. People under 30 are primarily responsible for the trend, says Lolo Luo, the owner of Lolo Love Vintage, a store in Shanghai that opened three years ago.

The trend follows in the footsteps of many Western countries where the nostalgic and cutting-edge fashionistas routinely dig out perfectly fine clothes, accessories, jewelry and all kinds of mysterious items from the past.

Fashion houses have been introducing haute couture lines to China, one after another. Italian design duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana tell Gan Tian if Chinese people are ready for such fashion.

After striking it big in the West, Singapore-born haute couturier Andrew Gn is now seeking to sweep the emerging high society in China.

Frugality is not a trait associated with Andrew Gn’s mega-rich clients. Even in the depths of the recent recession, demand remained constant for his $80,000 gowns, gorgeously embroidered confections that ensure their wealthy wearers make a dazzling impression at glittering parties and extravagant balls.

The Singapore-born haute couture designer has carved out a niche, making fabulous clothes for film stars and socialites in the US, princesses in the Middle East and, in recent times, nouveau riche women in China.
