When businessman Faraz Maani flew into Hong Kong with his wife and two children from Chile, southwest of South America in 1988 to start his fruits import business, the city’s trading environment was pretty simple, with only two direct fruit importers in the city.

Through hard work, persistence and determination, Maani soon won orders from the Kowloon Wholesale Fruit Market in Yau Ma Tei. He then routed the fruit orders to Chile, a nation that produces abundant fruits such as grapes, apples, plums, peaches, lime, lemons and oranges besides nectarines, kiwi and pears.

First overseas orders for China's technology likely to be signed later this year.

Officials behind China's self-developed nuclear reactor, known as the CAP1400, expect to sign its first overseas orders for the technology this year, most likely from South America or Asia.

Sun Qin, chairman of China National Nuclear Corp, told China Daily the deals should mean the start of construction of a CAP1400 reactor in China by the end of the year, after approval from the State Council.

Since the global financial crisis broke out in 2008, China’s outbound direct investment (ODI) has grown rapidly. It now has the fifth largest volume of outbound capital flow.

From January to November last year, Chinese domestic investors pumped direct investment worth $62.53 billion into 3,596 foreign companies in 130 countries and regions. The amount invested grew 25 percent over the course of a year.

On a global scale, the country has taken the top seat in terms of both sales and production of machine tools for 10 years consecutively.

However, as a barometer of manufacturing activity, its market value dropped 37 percent in the first eight months of 2012, according to data from the China Machinery Industry Federation.

As a result, many Chinese companies have seen declines in the number of new orders.
