Time ripe for Asia to assert its position

Conference seeks countries to expand financial goals and work together.

Though Asia is an important engine of global economy, with its economies demonstrating 8 percent average growth in the last 20 years and contributing to 50 percent of global economic growth, it is still sidelined in world affairs. This is disproportionate and Asia needs to raise “more voice”, former vice-premier Zeng Peiyan said at the opening of a two-day conference on Asian financial cooperation held in Indian financial capital Mumbai on Nov 26.

Hu vows more aid for African countries

President Hu Jintao proposed measures including financial assistance to the African Union's peacekeeping missions to boost China's relations with the continent.

President Hu Jintao on Thursday proposed measures in five priority areas, including financial assistance to the African Union's peacekeeping missions, to boost China's relations with the continent. 

The president made the promise when addressing the opening ceremony of the Fifth Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. 

Experts said the proposal reflects new trends on the African continent, including the lasting turmoil that has endangered regional development.

Working together is best way, Wen says

China-US relationship still has vast potential, key meeting told.

Despite US election rhetoric targeting China, cooperation will benefit both countries and the global economy, leaders and officials said on Tuesday. 

But Washington should also loosen restrictions on Chinese investment, they said. 

Surveys by both Democrats and Republicans on Monday showed that a majority of respondents felt that the US needs to toughen its China trade policies and "use every possible means to stop unfair trade practices".
